Natural Ways to Treat Thyroid

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland found at the base of the throat. It is responsible for metabolism of all cells of the body. An under-active, or hypothyroid, condition is one where the gland doesn't produce enough hormones to function optimally. It is typified by weight gain, sluggishness, headaches, low energy levels, depression, low body temperature and sensitivity to cold. An over-active, or hyperthyroid, condition is the opposite. The gland overproduces hormones and creates symptoms of restlessness or irritability, weight loss, tremors and other neurological signs and symptoms.

Diet

The addition of unrefined sea salt to the diet is the preferred choice over iodized table salt because of table salt's aluminum content. Organic dulse and other seaweeds can also be added to the diet and are a good source of iodine. Flax seed and ocean fish are optimal choices for omega-3 fatty acids, and virgin coconut oil, a saturated fat, has been shown to be helpful in thyroid regulation.

Mustard greens, radish, carob and bean sprouts all assist in production of hormones necessary for hypothyroid conditions, while kale, broccoli and all other cruciferous vegetables help to naturally suppress hormone production.

Massage Therapy

Lymphatic drainage massage can be highly beneficial in the removal of toxins accumulated in the hypothyroid individual. It may also serve to increase energy levels, assist with easing aches and pains and relieve symptoms of mild depression.

Standard Swedish massage, when used for the purpose of relaxation, may assist a hyperthyroid person with easing jumpy and irritated muscles, calming the mind and relaxing the body to help with symptoms of insomnia.

Herbs and Supplements

For both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid individuals, several herbs have shown efficacy in overall regulation of hormone levels of the thyroid. Among these are lemon balm (melissa), verbena, gentian and bugleweed. Other herbs and nutritional supplements for thyroid conditions may include dried kelp, which is high in iodine and an essential nutrient for production of thyroid hormones, and St. John's wort for symptoms of depression in hypothyroid conditions.

Consult a Physician

Natural ways to treat thyroid disorders are plentiful. For milder symptoms, they may be all that is needed to find substantial relief. Consult with a qualified health-care practitioner with questions and concerns regarding all thyroid conditions.
