Epsom Salts for Detox

Epsom salts, from the mineral-rich waters of Epsom, England, are composed of sulphate, magnesium, hydrogen and oxygen. Epsom salts help detoxify and revitalize your body. Loss of magnesium can lead to joint and digestive system problems, as well as a decline in general well-being. Epsom salts used in baths aid magnesium absorption. Epsom salts are very inexpensive and can be found in grocery stores, drug stores and health food markets.

Detoxification Baths

    Taking a hot bath with Epsom salts draws out the toxins stored in your body. Absorbed into the body, Epsom salts reduce swelling while relaxing stressed muscles. Here are some detoxification baths that will help your body and general well-being.
    Use one to two cups Epsom salts with one cup baking soda to promote the evacuation of poisons in your body. Soaking for 20 minutes works best. Anything longer will make you too tired. You can also use skin brushing to help the toxins leave your skin.
    To open your pores and eliminate toxins, use one cup Epsom salts, along with two tbsp. ginger. Mix these together before you add them to your bath. Sit in the bathtub for no more than 30 minutes.
    If you need to counteract radiation, use one cup baking soda and one to two cups Epsom salts in a bath. You can enjoy this soak for about 20 minutes.
    If you are feeling stressed, and your skin is quite dry, mix one cup Epsom salts, one cup sea salt and one cup sesame oil. Soak in the tub for no longer than 20 minutes.
    If you have a minor wound, Epsom salt baths will act as an antiseptic and cleanse the area.
    Using Epsom salt baths on a regular basis will also help rid your body of toxins in your digestive system. This will help you to absorb nutrients more efficiently. If you have multiple chemical sensitivities or Parkinson's disease you may have a problem with sulfate absorption. Soaking in Epsom salts two or three time per week will boost your supply of sulfate.
    Using Epsom salts as a detox bath once per week not only helps clean your body, but also helps you sleep well. Going to bed immediately after the bath helps your body sweat out toxins.

Note of Caution

    If you have blood-pressure dilemmas, diabetes or eczema, ask your doctor if using Epsom salts is recommended. If you also are someone who faints easily, adjust the water to a cooler temperature.
    Taking an Epsom bath will make you sweat profusely; drink plenty of water or herbal tea after your soak.
