Natural Pinworm Treatment

Pinworms are roundworm parasites that rely on the human body as a host for survival. You can get pinworms after consuming infested food or through unwashed hands. Pinworms lay tiny eggs inside the body which later hatch, grow and reproduce. These worms will move through your digestive tract and lay eggs in your anal area. Symptoms include itchiness in the vagina or anal area, sleep disturbances and gastrointestinal upset. Thankfully, there are some herbal treatments for the condition.

Garlic

Garlic, an herb of the onion family, can be used to treat pinworm infections. Garlic has natural antiseptic, antifungal and antibiotic agents. Garlic works well as a pinworm defense because it contains allicin; this ingredient works in destroying roundworm infestations. You can consume garlic as a food supplement by eating 2 to 4g of fresh garlic daily: each garlic clove, when minced, is equivalent to 1g. You can also consume garlic in capsule form by taking 200mg three times a day to alleviate pinworm conditions. Bear in mind that consuming large amounts of garlic can cause gastrointestinal upsets in some people.

Quassia

Quassia, found in the form of chips or shavings, is an herb that works well as a defense for pinworms, and the herb also improves your appetite. You can make an infusion of Quassia by soaking 12g of the shavings for 12 hours in a pint of cold water. After soaking, strain the mixture and consume 1 oz. of the mix three times a day. Since Quassia has a bitter flavor, you can also mix it in ginger tea to make it more palatable; use 1 to 2 droppersful of Quassia tincture to a cup of ginger tea. You should not consume more than 1 to 2g of Quassia a day. Pregnant women should refrain from using this remedy, because the effects on the fetus have not been determined.

Rue

Rue contains rutin, which helps suppress worm infections. Rue is derived from Ruta; it is a flavonoid that can be toxic to animals and/or humans in excessive doses. This herb has a bitter flavor; you can consume the tincture by adding 1 to 2 droppersful to a cup of water. Consume this two to three times daily to manage pinworm infections. This herb can upset your stomach, and it can increase your sensitivity to sunlight. This herb is not recommended for pregnant women since it stimulates the uterus. It is also not recommended for those with kidney problems.

Wormwood

Wormwood is an excellent herb for digestive ailments; this herb helps to improve your appetite, stimulates your stomach bile, and is an effective remedy against pinworms. You can make a tea out of wormwood by brewing 1 oz. of the herb in 10 oz. hot water for 15 minutes. Strain the mixture and consume cup before each meal three times daily. This remedy should not be used by pregnant women or breastfeeding women, and you should not consume more than 1 grams of wormwood two to three times a day to avoid toxicity.

How to Ease Dry Mouth

How to Ease Dry Mouth

Many people suffer from chronic dry mouth which is also known as cotton mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by certain medications and diseases. If you suffer from chronic dry mouth, see your doctor to determine the underlying cause. There are some things you can do to ease your cotton mouth.

Instructions

    1

Take coenzyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 will help to improve circulation which will help to promote saliva production. Coenzyme Q10 is available at health food stores and natural pharmacies.

    2

Use Aloe. Apply fresh Aloe to your gums and inside walls of your cheeks to promote moisture inside of your mouth. The Aloe will also soothe any cracks or sores in your mouth associated with a dry mouth.

    3

Rinse your mouth with Goldenseal Tea. Brew a cup of Goldenseal Tea and add 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Allow the Goldenseal Tea to cool completely and then rinse your mouth twice per day.

    4

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade. It may seem like common sense, but many times the cause of dry mouth or cotton mouth is dehydration. To maintain proper hydration 8 to 10 glasses of water should be consumed daily. Do not rely on coffee or alcoholic drinks, they will both dehydrate your body.

How Much Fish Oil Should You Take?

Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which offer a range of health benefits, but most American don't consume enough of the types of fish that contain high amounts omega-3 acids. Because of this, fish oil pills are a necessary supplement of omega-3, which is a substance that the human body does not produce on its own.

Recommendations

As of mid 2009, there are no health organizations that offer a recommended guideline for fish oil dosage, although most major health organizations do agree that fish oil is beneficial.

According to the American Heart Association, people should consume two 4-oz. servings of fish per week, or between 2,000 and 3,000 mg of fish oil. The Power of Fish (find a link in Resources) contains a table with the amount of omega-3 oil in a serving of many types of fish. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not recommend a daily dose of omega-3s as of mid 2009; however, the agency does state that no person should exceed 3,000 milligrams a day of fish oil.

Guidelines

Nordic Naturals, the manufacturers of one brand of fish oil pills, recommends a daily dose of two capsules or 1,400 mg of fish oil. Those suffering from lupus and arthritis may wish to take 4,000 to 5,000 mg of fish oil a day. Another manufacturer, EnergyFirst, recommends a beginning daily dose of 500 mg for basically healthy individuals.

Benefits

Fish oil capsules are the best way to supplement the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in a diet, although vegetarian options are available. The capsules don't have a fishy taste and are easy to swallow.

Several health benefits are associated with taking fish oil regularly, including cholesterol reduction, improved digestive health, relief from depression and more effective long-term performance from internal organs including your liver, kidneys and heart.

Types

The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil supplements are not a natural byproduct of the fish, but something that fish accumulate when they eat nutrient-rich algae. Vegetarians looking for the health benefits of omega-3 fish oil can locate all-vegetarian products made from this algae and still receive similar health benefits.

Future

There may be hope for a codified answer to the dose question in the future, thanks to ISSFAL, or the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (find a link in Resources). According to their mission statement, ISSFAL member researchers explore the "health effects of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acids (CLA), saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids as well as other lipids." With more than 500 members working toward the goal of greater usage of omega-3 supplements, along others, perhaps a daily recommended fish oil dose will be forthcoming.

Mercury Cleanse Information

Mercury is a metal found in either liquid or vapor form. Large amounts of this metal, from sources such as industry or food, are toxic in humans and can cause health complications. Detoxification, or cleanse, is often used to reduce these effects.

Mercury Effects

High levels of mercury are known to damage brain and kidney function. Mercury in the body is also linked to emotional and psychological side effects.

Mercury Sources

Mercury can sometimes enter the body through food, including some fish and other seafood. Food and Drug Administration guidelines limit allowed levels to 1 part per million in seafood.

Cleanse Purpose

Small amount of mercury can accumulate over time within the body. This gradual buildup can lead to health problems. Methods of detoxification, or cleansing, are designed to purge these toxins from the body.

Detoxification Method

Altering the diet is the most common way to detox harmful substances from the body. Supplements, including those based on sulfur or cilantro, assist the body in removing mercury. These substances mobilize toxins, allowing the body to excrete them naturally.

Cleanse Results

The detoxification or cleanse period can take time, ranging from days to weeks. Once mercury toxins have been eliminated, symptoms often fade as the body adjusts. A physician should always be consulted before beginning a cleanse process.

Natural Help for Lymphoma

Lymphoma is cancer of the lymphatic system, which is responsible for producing and storing white blood cells and plays a major role in detoxification and moving waste through the body. Lymphomas include Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Cutaneous T-cell. You can enhance your standard therapy and ease its side effects with a combination of diet, natural supplements and natural therapies. It is wise to consult with an experienced health care provider.

Diet

Stop consuming common food allergens, such as dairy, wheat, corn, soy, preservatives and food additives to see if you notice an improvement in your condition; consider getting tested for food sensitivities and allergies. Eliminating allergens from the diet can help you feel better overall and reduce inflammation in the body. Cut back on refined, white flour foods and sugar, red meats and trans-fatty acids which are commonly found in commercially baked goods like cookies and fried foods. Avoid coffee and alcohol.

Increase consumption of foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, particularly berries, kale, spinach and peppers. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage contain cancer-fighting substances. Aim for healthier protein sources like cold-water fish, beans and whole soy like tofu and tempeh. Drink six to eight glasses of water every day.

Supplements

A daily multivitamin can address any deficiencies in the diet and ensure adequate intake of the most essential vitamins and minerals; take as directed on the product label. Probiotics contain the "friendly" bacteria that enhance immunity and promote gastrointestinal health, both of which are compromised by standard cancer treatments. Probiotics come in a variety of forms; take as directed on the label. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil fight inflammation; take one to two capsules or 1 tbsp. three times a day. Discuss this supplement with your doctor if you take blood-thinning medications, including aspirin. L-theanine supports the nervous system; take 200 mg one to three times a day. Melatonin can help you sleep; it is possible it also has anti-cancer properties. Take 2 to 5 milligrams before bed. Some practitioners suggest higher doses are needed for cancer but you should not use more than this unless working with an experienced healthcare provider who tells you otherwise.

Herbs

Green tea, Reishi mushrooms and olive leaf extract all exhibit anti-cancer effects and boost immunity; take 250 to 500 mg a day, 150 to 300 mg three times a day and 250 to 500 mg three times a day respectively. Milk thistle will help with detoxification; take 80 to 160 mg three times a day. Wheat germ extract, mixed with the beverage of your choice, boosts immunity and contains cancer-fighting compounds; drink once or twice a day.

Homeopathy

Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma usually require radiation treatment. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, homeopathy can address the side effects of radiation. Homeopathy is a highly individualized system of medicine. If you are interested in complementary homeopathic treatments for your cancer, you should consult with a professional homeopath.

Radium bromatum can relieve side effects of radiation, especially if accompanied by feelings of arthritis. Take as directed on the product label.

Other Suggestions

Contrast hydrotherapy can enhance immune function and help move nutrients and waste products throughout the body. Finish off a hot shower with one to two minutes of cold water. This will stimulate lymphatic flow. Acupuncture can enhance immunity. It is particularly helpful for lymphoma patients since it can help with detoxification. This treatment is also helpful for reducing side effects of conventional cancer treatments. Exercise can enhance your general well-being, ease depression and aid in detoxification.

Vicks Vaporub Remedies

Vicks Vaporub Remedies

The original Vicks VapoRub was invented in the 1890s by Lunsford Richardson in Greensboro, NC. It was marketed as Vicks Croup and Pneumonia Salve. There have been product changes throughout the years and the current Vicks VapoRub product is available in both a cream and ointment. Both are designed to be topical cough treatments for use by people ages 2 and up. They also are intended to treat minor muscle aches and pains. Vicks VapoRub is not believed to cause drowsiness or nervousness. Vicks VapoRub also plays a part in numerous home remedies.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Vicks VapoRub are camphor, eucalyptus oil and menthol. The powerful vapors emitted by these ingredients relieve congestion and coughing. Inactive ingredients include cedar leaf oil, special petrolatum, nutmeg oil, turpentine oil and thymol.

Standard Directions

Rub the cream or ointment onto the chest, throat or aching muscles. Cover the ointment with a warm, loose cloth. Repeat up to three times in 24 hours.

Home Remedies

Vicks VapoRub is used to cure nail fungus. Rub the infected nail with Vicks VapoRub two to three times a day. After a few days you should see improvement. Continue for at least six months or until a new nail has completely grown in. This will also work on athlete's foot.

Some people suggest the use of Vicks VapoRub for hemorrhoids. It shrinks the hemorrhoid and relieves itching. Clean the area and apply Vicks directly to the hemorrhoid. Side effects may include a burning sensation.

Place some Vicks VapoRub on chapped lips to soothe discomfort and soften the lips. Be careful to not ingest the VapoRub. It is for external use only.

If you have a headache, VapoRub may be the cure. Dab a little Vicks VapoRub on your temples, or forehead, for headache relief. Do not place it near your eyes.

Cure dandruff by rinsing your hair in a mixture of Vicks VapoRub and mineral oil. Let sit and shampoo out.

Place a little VapoRub on bug bites. It will relieve the pain or itch.

Rub Vicks VapoRub on the bottoms of your feet and then put on socks. This should cure nighttime coughing.

Warnings

Vicks VapoRub is a topical product. It should never be ingested. If the product is ingested contact the Poison Control Center immediately.

Discuss the use of Vicks VapoRub with your doctor. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use Vicks VapoRub without a prior consultation with their doctor.

Do not apply directly to open wounds or damaged skin. Keep any bandages or coverings loose and allow air to circulate.

Do not apply directly inside nostrils and keep away from eyes. Applying Vicks directly into nostrils may cause the product to be inhaled into the lungs. This could cause a buildup of the petrolatum base and lead to chemical pneumonitis.

Vicks VapoRub should not be heated or microwaved. Doing so may result in burns.

If symptoms of cough, cold, rash or muscle soreness last for more than seven days, seek medical attention.
